Biokinetic Blueprint: Pounding the Pavement
Running, one of the most challenging feats our bodies can perform, is actually innate to us as humans, with our elongated limbs, upright postures, and inherent endurance capabilities making us perfect runners. However, it is interesting that running, despite being a natural activity, is responsible for a significant number of injuries in endurance sports, including well-known ones like plantar fasciitis, shin splints, and ITB syndrome.
As part of my master's degree research focused on triathlete injuries, it became clear that the majority of injuries were running-related, accounting for 68% among males and 74% among females in a cohort of 60 triathletes. These statistics highlight the various factors that come into play when it comes to running, such as running form, warm-up and cool-down routines, strength, flexibility, endurance, footwear, and the fundamental ability to coordinate fluid and efficient forward motion. In this post, I will shed light on two of these attributes and provide some ideas and thoughts on them.
Interestingly, the research revealed that warm-up and cool-down routines did not show significant associations with injury prevention. Athletes who occasionally performed warm-ups or cool-downs were more likely to report pre-season injuries compared to those who consistently incorporated these routines before and after training and racing. This finding emphasizes the importance of adequately utilizing warm-up and cool-down practices, which have often been neglected and underutilized by amateur athletes.
While we often seek inspiration from professional athletes and their training regimes, it is important to consider what is practical for us as amateur athletes in terms of time availability and cost. A well-executed warm-up and cool-down can be one of the simplest and most affordable way to prevent injuries and sustain running.
Another crucial aspect that has gained prominence in running is specific conditioning and strength training. This can take various forms, with runners finding their own unique ways to maintain strength during their runs, such as engaging in Pilates, yoga, crossfit, gym classes, online programs, or even following their favorite professional athletes. Regardless of the chosen approach, the key takeaway here is that strength matters. Understanding the biomechanics of running and acknowledging that most of us do not possess the form of an Eliud Kipchoge, it becomes apparent that running can place significant demands on the body.
The impact of our bodies on the ground is absorbed by tendons and muscles working in harmony, acting as a spring-like mechanism to distribute pressure and propel us forward.
Therefore, it is crucial to complement running or any endurance sport with specific strength training in order to maintain muscle strength, enhance stability, and provide the best possible opportunity for injury prevention and endurance sport sustainability.
