Biokinetic Blueprint: Im definitely going to become an accountant, my personal journey.

"What in the world was I thinking, spending long hours behind a desk, dealing with numbers 24/7/365? How could I have done this day in and day out? There are better and more equipped people who can perform these tasks and would enjoy them. Thank goodness I didn't. My personal journey to Biokinetics is an intriguing one, of not even understanding the ramifications of certain decisions and their impact. Upon reflection, looking back over the past 13 years of being in private practice, to tell the truth, it has been a blur. Sitting down and using this opportunity to reflect upon my decisions, and most times leaving it in the hands of other people to decide my fate, has literally put me where I am today. As I stated in my introduction, I was almost enrolled for a BCOM accounting, before being brought hurtling back down to earth that I hadn't even made the grade to get into the degree. "Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and regroup" is the old adage. A general spor...

Biokinetic Blueprint: The fine art of rehabilitation. The way the world sees Biokinetics or not...

Practitioners, artists, change agents, and professionals are all the new age nuances of how the world defines disruptors within modern industry. It has been a challenging and engaging question for me on how to be a disruptor, a change agent within the current world climate and context. Is the mere fact that you have a job in an ever-evolving and modern profession, with many opportunities, a problem? The complacency of continuous education, where someone is willing to give you their knowledge rather than being the person who initiates the knowledge. Every profession that has been around for many years has its industry leaders, the people who have put the profession on the map. Does this give an opportunity to thrive for younger professions and people who are early? In my opinion, any profession is deemed a fine art. Obviously, some are just more creative, movement-inspired, or purely creative in the pure sense of the word. Biokinetics is, in that sense, a fine art. There is nothing bett...

Biokinetic Blueprint: Glorified personal trainer! Exploring the Biokinetics Approach.

Image
Let me start this off by not offending any personal trainer in their respective industry, as some of the best trainers I know have built themselves up from nothing to become well-respected masters of their domain. In terms of my relationship with personal trainers, I refer many of my patients back to their respective trainers and pass on many patients to personal trainers once they have finished their rehabilitation with me. I guess where I am going with this is that no profession is an island, and thinking you can get by doing everything and holding onto patients who no longer require your skills is doing a disservice to them. So where does my interest and philosophy of Biokinetics interact with the patient and their individual needs? Well, it is just that - each patient is an individual case based on their unique merit. No patient I have seen has been identical in their injuries or needs. Every patient is a good challenge in unfolding the pieces that make up the puzzle to help along ...

Biokinetic Blueprint: I am not a Physiotherapist! An Introduction to the Field of Biokinetics from a Practitioner's Perspective

Image
I have been asked this question so many times, if I had a rand for every time, I wouldn't be in this profession. The common and most pertinent question, not only asked by potential patients but also by other health professionals, is what's the difference between Physiotherapy and Biokinetics? In all honesty, there isn't much of a difference in the fact that Physiotherapists can, in most instances, complete the rehabilitation process with the tools and expertise with which a Biokineticist can. I believe there is one fundamental and, from a practical perspective, significant difference which distinguishes the professions. Biokinetics is based on clinical exercise and the body's ability to move within a normative process without pain or hindrance. The modality of a Biokineticist is rooted in the flexibility of muscles for normative joint motion and, thereafter, the establishment of strength and stability of said joint. In saying this, I am opposed to the fact that no one e...
